India Edge Sri Lanka in Super Over After Nissanka Century

By Cricbuzz Staff • Last updated on Sat, Sep 27, 2025, 08:56 AM

Pathum Nissanka’s maiden T20I century went in vain as Sri Lanka managed just two runs in the Super Over, allowing India to clinch a thrilling win in Dubai. This final Super 4s clash of the tournament — technically inconsequential — turned out to be one of the most exhilarating contests.

Super Over Finish

Kusal Perera holed out to deep point off the very first ball of the Super Over. Dasun Shanaka survived an overturned caught-behind call only to be dismissed next delivery, leaving Sri Lanka with just two runs. India required three and sealed it in one delivery with Suryakumar Yadav threading a gap through cover.

India’s Innings

PowerPlay – Abhishek Gives India Another Rollicking Start

Phase score: 71/1 [RR 11.83, 4s/6s: 9/2]

Inserted to bat, India lost Shubman Gill early. But Abhishek Sharma counterattacked, hammering sixes off Chameera and bringing up a 22-ball fifty — his third in a row — to ensure another explosive start.

Middle Overs – Tilak and Samson Power India

Phase score: 79/2 [RR 8.77, 4s/6s: 4/3]

Suryakumar Yadav’s lean patch continued as he was trapped LBW by Hasaranga. Abhishek holed out soon after but Samson and Tilak Varma stabilized the innings with good strike rotation and timely blows.

Death Overs – Steady Scoring Sees India Breach 200

Phase score: 52/2 [RR 10.40, 4s/6s: 3/2]

Despite losing Samson and Hardik Pandya, India kept rotating strike. Axar Patel’s last-ball six took India past 200 while Tilak remained unbeaten on 49.

Sri Lanka’s Innings

PowerPlay – Sri Lanka Match India Blow for Blow

Phase score: 72/1 [RR 12.00, 4s/6s: 8/3]

Nissanka got underway stylishly while Kusal Mendis fell for a golden duck. Sri Lanka kept pace with the asking rate, reaching 72/1 after six overs — one run ahead of India’s start.

Middle Overs – Nissanka and Perera Dominate

Phase score: 85/1 [RR 9.44, 4s/6s: 7/3]

Nissanka raised a 25-ball fifty, Perera matched him soon after and the duo added 127 — the highest stand in Asia Cup T20s. India’s breakthrough came when Perera was stumped off Varun Chakaravarthy.

Death Overs – Right Down to the Wire

Phase score: 45/3 [RR 9.00, 4s/6s: 2/2]

Kuldeep bowled a tight over to dismiss Asalanka, Arshdeep removed Kamindu Mendis, but Nissanka fought on to his maiden T20I hundred. With 12 needed off the final over, Sri Lanka fell just short, forcing the Super Over.

Brief Scores

India 202/5 in 20 overs (Abhishek Sharma 61, Tilak Varma 49*; Charith Asalanka 1-18) tied with Sri Lanka 202/5 in 20 overs (Pathum Nissanka 107, Kusal Perera 58; Kuldeep Yadav 1-31, Varun Chakaravarthy 1-31). India won the Super Over.
