Do you believe that we can create a safer working environment or better healthcare through research-based advocacy for workers in Indian manufacturing? The above roles will be responsible for strengthening Safe in India’s (SII’s) worker injury and/or esic service quality data, its analytics, policy research, and advocacy efforts by capturing onground evidence. These roles and/or a combination of these roles will conduct national-level surveys and provide data for the annual flagship report of Safe in India Foundation, CRUSHED 2023 and future advocacy for improving ESIC services. The research associate/ assistant will work on the National Assessment project of SII of mapping accidents across major auto-sector hubs in India and will directly report to the Project lead. The work done by RAs will be duly acknowledged in the report and will be remunerated.
About Safe in India: SII is a community service organisation that was founded by a group of alumni of IIMA in 2016. It was set up in response to shocking evidence on crush injuries in the factories and workshops of Manesar, the automobile manufacturing hub of India. Currently, SII is being advised by a prominent academic, social sector and senior IAS officers’ as council of Advisors to forward its mission of industrial workplace safety and improvement in ESIC through dedicated work in four social-impact areas: (1) assisting workers injured in the automobile supply chain in accessing ESIC’s healthcare and accident compensation, (2) using this evidence to improve safety in the Indian auto sector benefitting over one crore workers, (3) drawing from its on-the-ground, practice to enable improvements in ESIC processes, potentially benefiting over 14 crore Indians who are dependent (directly or indirectly) on ESIC, and (4) increasing awareness among workers on occupational safety as well as their rights and responsibilities as ESIC-registered workers.
Since 2016, SII has assisted 5,000+ injured workers with ESIC healthcare and compensation, enabling around Rs 40 crores in reaching its rightful beneficiaries. SII has also embarked upon a number of promising accident prevention initiatives with leading auto-sector brands, with Central and State authorities as well as the sector’s apex industry associations, and ESIC.
Role description: SII is looking to recruit three-five research assistants/ associates, reporting to the Project lead on the National Assessment, on a full-time/part-time/flexible terms. The Research Assistants/ Associates should be able to have strong experience in collecting primary data, reading and reporting data in the areas of worker safety in the auto sector supply chain and/or users of ESIC services. The survey will be carried out in June, July and August23.
Skill and experience expectations:
At least a graduate in SW/Safety professional/related areas and ideally a post-graduate
Willingness to travel to auto clusters and meet workers at different locations including worker colonies (see locations below)
Willingness to seek permission/consent from workers for the survey and to take their pictures and videos
Passion to be part of a long-term change for improving working conditions and social security for workers
Interest in the area of labour rights/policies/worker safety/ESIC; experience in one or more of these areas is a plus
Strong critical thinking skills
Ability to read and comprehend quantitative data
Strong communication skills (particularly with workers in regional languages based on the geographical location)
In addition to English/ Hindi/as required with duty bearers like doctors at ESIC hospital, Officials at ESIC/ Industrial safety and Health-Labour Department/DGFASLI branch/regional and sub-regional office)
Experience working in a team/ project
Demonstrated ability to grasp concepts quickly and to work to deliver as per plans and with quality assume new roles to start contributing towards SII’s worker well-being agenda
Alignment with SII’s values; central focus on worker well-being is essential
Remuneration: Competitive and negotiable based on skills and experience, within the range of Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 pm based on the contract. Travel allowances will be paid.
Location: Different geographical locations, as agreed. Working onsite in different areas of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Waluj, Aurangabad, Gujarat and Haryana.
