The HALO Trust is a humanitarian non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in 1988, specializing in the removal of landmines and other explosive remnants of war. With over 10,000 staff members, HALO operates in nearly 30 countries, including Afghanistan, Cambodia, Mozambique, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Angola, Eritrea, Kosovo, Chechnya, Nagorno-Karabakh, and Abkhazia.

Historical Background:

Established by former British Army officer Colin Campbell Mitchell, the organization initially focused on Afghanistan, addressing the extensive landmine contamination resulting from the Soviet-Afghan War. Over time, HALO expanded its operations to other conflict-affected regions, aiming to create safe environments for communities impacted by landmines and unexploded ordnance.

Notable Milestones:

  • Princess Diana's Advocacy: In January 1997, Princess Diana collaborated with HALO Trust during her global campaign to ban and remove all anti-personnel mines, bringing significant international attention to the landmine crisis.

  • Prince Harry's Involvement: Following in his mother's footsteps, Prince Harry has been actively involved with HALO Trust. In September 2024, he delivered a speech at a HALO Trust event in New York, emphasizing the importance of continuing efforts to clear landmines and protect affected communities.

Recent Activities:

HALO Trust continues its critical work in various regions:

  • Syria: Teams are actively engaged in clearing unexploded ordnance to ensure the safety of local populations. This effort is vital due to the increased casualties from hidden explosives following the prolonged conflict.

  • Ukraine: In response to ongoing conflicts, HALO has implemented awareness campaigns and deployed drones to detect and disable mines, significantly contributing to civilian safety.
