Food And Agriculture Organization Of The United Nations (FAO) - Andorra
details

Andorra is a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), having joined the organization on May 15, 2012.

Key Agricultural Initiatives and Legislation:

  • Subalpine Pastures Recognition: In 2023, Andorra's subalpine and supraforestal pastures were designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) by the FAO. This acknowledgment highlights the country's enduring agropastoral practices, where local herders have sustainably managed livestock grazing in high-altitude regions, contributing to both food security and the preservation of traditional knowledge.

  • Agricultural Legislation: Andorra has enacted several laws to support and diversify its agricultural sector. Notably:

    • The Act on Agriculture and Animal Breeding (June 22, 2000) establishes foundational guidelines for farming and livestock activities.
    • The Law No. 18/2018 focuses on ecological production and quality standards for agricultural and food products, promoting sustainable farming practices.
    • The Law No. 31/2022 aims at the development and diversification of the livestock and agricultural sectors, reflecting the country's commitment to evolving its rural economy.

Ministry of Environment, Agriculture, and Sustainability:

The primary governmental body overseeing agricultural and environmental matters in Andorra is the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture, and Sustainability. This ministry plays a pivotal role in implementing policies related to sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and climate change adaptation.

FAO's Engagement with Andorra:

While Andorra does not host a dedicated FAO country office, the FAO provides resources and data pertinent to Andorra's agricultural sector through its online platforms. These resources offer insights into the country's agricultural practices, legislative frameworks, and sustainability initiatives.

In summary, Andorra actively collaborates with the FAO to promote sustainable agricultural practices, preserve its unique agropastoral heritage, and implement policies that support ecological production and diversification within its agricultural sector.
