Sinner Advances to Wimbledon Quarter-Finals After Dimitrov Retires

Top seed Jannik Sinner advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Monday after Grigor Dimitrov was forced to retire due to injury during their fourth-round match. Dimitrov was leading 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 when he pulled up holding his right pectoral muscle and, in tears, ended the match after two hours of play.
Sinner, who had suffered a fall earlier in the match and struggled against Dimitrov’s varied game, consoled his opponent on court. “Honestly I don’t know what to say,” Sinner said. “He’s an incredible player and a good friend. It’s very tough to see him like this, he would deserve to play the next round.”
Dimitrov’s injury became evident when he missed a backhand volley at 40/0 in the third set and grabbed at his chest. Though he initially held serve for 2-2, he collapsed moments later and retired shortly after returning from an off-court break.
This marks Dimitrov’s fifth consecutive retirement in Grand Slam appearances. Sinner added, “I don’t take this as a win at all. He’s one of the hardest-working players on tour, and it’s very unfortunate.”
Sinner, now into his fourth straight Wimbledon quarter-final, will face World No. 10 Ben Shelton next. Shelton defeated Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 7-5 to reach his first Wimbledon quarter-final.
