Squid Game Season 3’s Final Scene Reveals Cate Blanchett as the American Recruiter

By Chancellor Agard | June 28, 2025

In a twist that stunned fans around the globe, Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett appears in the final scene of Squid Game Season 3—marking a powerful and unexpected cameo that signals the chilling continuation of the deadly competition.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed Blanchett's role as the new American recruiter, mirroring the mysterious recruiter originally played by Gong Yoo in Season 1. Her appearance is brief but impactful, emphasizing the show's recurring theme: the games never truly end.

“We thought having a woman as a recruiter would be more dramatic and intriguing,” said Hwang. “And as for why Cate Blanchett—she’s just the best, with unmatched charisma. We needed someone who could dominate the screen with just one or two words, which is exactly what she did.”

A Global Expansion of the Game

The scene takes place in Downtown Los Angeles, far from the series’ usual Korean setting. The Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) is sitting in a car when he hears the familiar slap of ddakji tiles, a call-back to the very first recruitment method used in the series.

Looking out the window, he sees Blanchett, suited up and playing ddakji in an alley with a desperate-looking man. As the Front Man rolls down the window, their eyes meet in a subtle but loaded exchange, signaling that the game has indeed gone international. As he drives away, Blanchett’s character calmly continues playing ddakji—her recruit desperate for another chance.

A Scene Loaded with Symbolism

This final moment carries deep thematic weight. It suggests that even after revolutions, sacrifices, and hard-won resistance, the system—represented by the games—still survives. It also underscores a larger philosophical statement: some systems are too deeply entrenched to defeat outright.

Blanchett's performance left a lasting impression on the crew and cast.

“During the shoot, she reminded me of what true talent looks like,” said Hwang. “She was amazing at playing ddakji. I believe she successfully flipped the ddakji with her first try.”

Even Lee Byung-hun shared his interpretation of the moment:

“Personally, I interpret it as, despite all of the noble efforts of so many people, the world still continues as it was before.”

What’s Next?

With Season 3 ending on such a poignant and open-ended note, questions now swirl about a potential Squid Game Season 4. While Netflix has yet to confirm a new season, fans and critics alike are already speculating whether the games will now expand globally with recruiters like Blanchett’s character leading the charge.

For now, all three seasons of Squid Game are available to stream on Netflix.
