Exactly one year ago, on June 29, 2024, Indian cricket fans around the globe witnessed history being made. Under the calm leadership of Rohit Sharma, Team India lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy, defeating South Africa in a thrilling final. This landmark victory ended India’s 17-year wait for another T20 World Cup title and ended the country’s 11-year drought of ICC trophies.

A Perfect Campaign: Unbeaten and Unmatched

Team India’s journey in the 2024 tournament was flawless. They did not lose a single match:

  • Group Stage: 3 wins, 1 no result

  • Super 8: 3 wins

  • Semi-Final: Defeated England

  • Final: Triumphed over South Africa

In the final match held in Barbados, India posted 176/7 in 20 overs with crucial contributions across the lineup. In reply, South Africa came close but were restricted to 169/8, thanks to a spirited fightback from Indian bowlers in the death overs.

At one point, South Africa needed 30 runs in 5 overs with 6 wickets in hand, but Team India’s bowling unit turned the game around. The turning point was a spectacular boundary catch by Suryakumar Yadav, dismissing David Miller on the first ball of the final over. Hardik Pandya held his nerve, conceding just 8 runs in the last over and sealing India’s title.

End of an Era: Rohit, Virat, Jadeja Retire from T20Is

Post-tournament, the celebrations were bittersweet as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from T20 Internationals. While fans were emotional, the players left behind unforgettable performances.

In the final:

  • Virat Kohli played a pivotal knock of 76 runs

  • Rohit and Jadeja, though quiet in the final, had been outstanding throughout the tournament
