Drone Warfare Intensifies Along Border Amid Operation Sindoor

Amid the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, India and Pakistan are now accusing each other of launching multiple waves of drone attacks along their shared borders, escalating fears of a prolonged military conflict.

Both sides have reported dozens of drone incursions, with Indian defence forces claiming that Pakistani drones attempted to breach Indian airspace in Jammu, Punjab, and Rajasthan overnight. Simultaneously, Pakistani media and officials alleged that Indian drones targeted military-linked installations in Lahore and Rawalpindi.

India Reports Drone Swarms Along Western Borders

According to the Ministry of Defence, Indian radars detected and intercepted several drones launched from Pakistan in the last 24 hours.
Affected regions include:

  • Jammu (RS Pura, Samba)

  • Pathankot and Gurdaspur (Punjab)

  • Barmer and Jaisalmer (Rajasthan)

Air defence systems, including Akash missiles, jamming systems, and drone nets, were activated to counter the threat. No casualties or damage were reported.

An Indian official said:

"Drone incursions are being handled swiftly and with precision. Our response remains within the framework of self-defence."

Pakistan Claims Retaliatory Drone Action

In a statement released via state-run media, Pakistan's defence sources alleged that Indian drones conducted "surveillance and tactical strikes" near military supply depots and radar stations in Punjab province.
The Pakistani Foreign Office condemned what it called “aggressive provocations”, vowing a strong response.

Blackouts, Sirens, and Civilian Alerts

Both countries have implemented temporary blackouts and high-alert protocols in several districts. In India, sirens were reported in Jammu, Amritsar, and parts of Gujarat’s Kutch region, urging civilians to remain indoors.

Border states have increased:

  • Military patrols

  • No-fly zones near sensitive areas

  • Civil evacuation drills in proximity to military bases

What's Next? Unmanned Warfare Raises New Challenges

The escalation into drone warfare signals a shift in strategy on both sides. Drones allow for fast, low-cost, and deniable engagements — increasing the risk of misinterpretation and uncontrolled escalation.

Military analysts warn that this phase of the conflict may lead to:

  • Cyber warfare

  • Satellite jamming

  • Further retaliatory air/naval operations

India Reaffirms Measured Approach

Despite growing tensions, Indian authorities maintain that India’s military actions are defensive and precise, aimed solely at terror infrastructure and aerial threats.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reiterated:

"India will continue to safeguard its people and territory. Escalation is not our aim, but any threat will be decisively countered."
