Yuzvendra Chahal's Magical Over Shatters CSK at Chepauk
Chennai, April 30, 2025 – A roaring Chepauk crowd had just witnessed vintage MS Dhoni launch a one-handed six into the stands off Yuzvendra Chahal, raising hopes of a 200+ finish for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). But in an extraordinary twist, Chahal scripted a game-changing turnaround, taking four wickets in five balls, including a hat-trick, to restrict CSK to 190 all out.
Coming into bowl with dew on the ground, reduced fielders due to a slow over-rate, and a bruised economy rate from earlier overs, Chahal turned the tables with his crafty legspin and astute game awareness. His victims in the 19th over included Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad—after Dhoni had holed out to long-off. From 184/5, CSK crumbled to 190 all out, losing their last five wickets for just six runs in seven balls.
“It was the 19th over and Mahi bhai was batting, so anything could have happened,” Chahal said at the break. “I focused on keeping the batters unsettled and playing with their minds.”
Chahal’s hat-trick—his second in IPL history—left the crowd stunned and earned him a signature meme-worthy celebration. With this performance, he further cemented his reputation as one of the most lethal wicket-takers in IPL history, now having taken 2+ wickets in an over on 18 occasions.
PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting lauded Chahal, stating:
“At one point, it didn’t look like he’d take 4 for 30. But that one over halted CSK’s momentum. He’s a match-winner, and that's why we spent INR 18 crore on him.”
As Punjab Kings gear up for their next match in Dharamsala, Ponting is confident that Chahal’s quality will shine regardless of pitch conditions.
