Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the launch of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) — a new unit focused on developing next-generation AI models and foundation technologies. This move signals Meta’s aggressive ambition to lead in the superintelligence race, positioning itself alongside major players like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google.
Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) will consolidate Meta’s AI initiatives under one umbrella, including:
Foundation models like Llama
FAIR (Fundamental AI Research)
AI-powered product teams
A new team building the next generation of frontier models
Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, has been appointed Chief AI Officer to lead MSL.
Nat Friedman, former GitHub CEO and AI investor, joins to co-lead applied AI product research.
MSL includes a wave of high-profile hires from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic, many of whom co-created major models like GPT-4o, Llama, and Gemini.
Zuckerberg emphasized that superintelligence is within reach and Meta aims to provide "personal superintelligence for everyone." He outlined Meta's advantages:
