The 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) is being celebrated today, June 21, with a renewed global focus on health, harmony, and holistic living. This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” underscores the connection between personal well-being and the health of our planet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading the national celebration from Visakhapatnam, where over three lakh participants have joined the mass yoga demonstration under the ‘Yoga Sangam’ initiative. The event is being held across more than 1 lakh locations in India, with a total of 2 crore people expected to take part in this decadal edition.

PM Modi: “Yoga is the pause button the world needs”

In his address, PM Modi highlighted the global unrest and emphasized the power of yoga as a means of finding peace and balance.

"Today, the world is facing tension and unrest in many regions. In such times, yoga gives direction towards peace. Yoga is the pause button that humanity needs to breathe, balance, and become whole again,” said PM Modi.

He further noted that yoga has become a part of the daily life of crores of people around the world, adding that when India proposed June 21 as International Yoga Day at the United Nations in 2014, the proposal was accepted by 177 member states—a record in UN history.

Guinness Record by 22,122 Tribal Students in Andhra Pradesh

In a historic achievement, 22,122 tribal students from Andhra Pradesh created a Guinness World Record by performing Surya Namaskar simultaneously at Andhra University. The feat was acknowledged and celebrated by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who also felicitated PM Modi during the Visakhapatnam celebrations.

Yoga Celebrations Across India

From Delhi’s Red Fort to remote villages, Yoga Day is being celebrated at 109 major locations in Delhi alone. In Uttar Pradesh, CM Yogi Adityanath participated in yoga sessions along with thousands of citizens.

The Ministry of Ayush has launched ten signature events to make yoga more inclusive, including:

  • Yoga Bandhan

  • Harit Yoga

  • Yoga Unplugged

The government also plans to upgrade parks across panchayats and municipalities into dedicated Yoga Parks, encouraging citizens to incorporate yoga into their daily lives.

International Participation: Yoga at the UN and Beyond

Yoga Day isn’t just limited to India. Indian embassies, consulates, and cultural centers across the globe are hosting yoga demonstrations. A major celebration is also underway at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, reflecting the global embrace of India’s ancient wellness tradition.

Even King Charles of the United Kingdom sent a message for Yoga Day, appreciating the day’s theme and yoga’s increasing popularity in the UK:

“Yoga is a powerful means of improving physical and mental health and fosters a sense of well-being and togetherness within communities.”

Survey: 1 in 4 Indians Now Practice Yoga

A nationwide survey by the Ministry of Ayush revealed that nearly 25% of Indians now incorporate yoga into their lifestyle. Out of 30,084 participants:

  • 11% practice yoga daily

  • 13% do it occasionally

The remaining 75% of non-practitioners are being encouraged through grassroots initiatives, digital campaigns, and institutional partnerships.

Yoga: A Gift from India to the World

Yoga is more than just a physical discipline. As PM Modi reminded the world, yoga is a timeless Indian gift for inner harmony, mental clarity, and spiritual growth. In 2025, this message is more relevant than ever.

The theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” resonates deeply in a world facing health crises and environmental challenges. Yoga’s holistic approach reminds us of our interconnectedness—with ourselves, each other, and the Earth.

Conclusion

International Yoga Day 2025 has once again united millions across the globe in a celebration of health, harmony, and humanity. From beachside sessions in Visakhapatnam to global events in New York and London, the day stands as a reminder that yoga is for everyone—beyond borders, beliefs, and backgrounds.
