What should have been a moment of celebration for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans turned into a horrifying tragedy as a stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives, including a woman and a class 9 student. Over 47 others were injured, with several in critical condition.

What Happened?

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon as lakhs of fans gathered outside the stadium for RCB’s IPL 2025 victory parade. With only limited gate access, chaos broke out near Cubbon Park gate, resulting in a massive crowd surge.

Some fans attempted to scale the compound wall, while others were crushed or trampled. Emergency services were overwhelmed due to traffic gridlock in the area.

Casualty Details:

  • 3 declared dead on arrival at Bowring Hospital

  • 4 died at Vydehi Multispecialty Hospital

  • Several more injured are admitted across multiple hospitals in Bengaluru

???? Police and even civilians used private vehicles to transport the injured. CPR was administered on-site by fellow fans in many cases.

Official Reactions:

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

“Over 2-3 lakh people gathered near a stadium meant for 35,000. A small gate gave way, leading to the stampede.”

He rushed to the hospital and promised an investigation into the incident.

PM Narendra Modi

“The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray for the injured.”

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot

Called for an urgent inquiry and suitable compensation for victims’ families.

Opposition Reaction:

The BJP and opposition leaders slammed the Congress-led state government for “criminal negligence,” citing zero crowd management, lack of basic safety arrangements, and irresponsible VIP photo-ops.

RCB's Grand Homecoming Cut Short

RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, landed in Bengaluru earlier in the day and was welcomed by Deputy CM DK Shivakumar and thousands of fans. The planned felicitation at Vidhana Soudha was later scaled down due to rain and tragedy.

Other Incidents During Celebrations:

  • A youth was attacked with a sharp object in Peenya during late-night celebrations

  • Fans climbed buses and blocked roads; mild lathi charge reported in several areas

Final Words

This tragedy casts a dark shadow over RCB’s historic IPL 2025 win. As Bengaluru mourns the lives lost, urgent questions are being raised about public safety, preparedness, and accountability.
