PMRF (Prime Minister's Research Fellowship) - Eligibility and Application Procedure

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Educational Qualifications:

    • Completed or pursuing the final year of:
      • Four or five-year undergraduate programs (B.Tech, B.E., etc.) or five-year integrated M.Tech programs or two-year M.Sc. programs in Science and Technology streams from IISc/IITs/NITs/IISERs/IIEST and centrally funded IIITs.
      • Dual degree programs combining undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Science and Technology from recognized institutes/universities in India.
    • Minimum CGPA/CPI of 8.0 on a 10-point scale is required. For integrated or dual degree programs, CGPA/CPI of the undergraduate part (first four years) is considered.
    • Alternatively, candidates from other recognized institutes/universities should have a minimum CGPA of 8.0 and meet additional criteria like a GATE score of 650 or UGC/CSIR JRF rank of 100 or less, or possess an NBHM fellowship.
    • Candidates who have qualified GATE and are pursuing or have completed M.Tech./MS by research at PMRF Granting Institutions with a minimum CGPA or CPI of 8.0 are also eligible.
  2. Ph.D. Admission:

    • Apply for a Ph.D. program in one of the PMRF granting institutes and secure admission.
  3. Institute Recommendation:

    • The admitting PMRF granting institute must strongly recommend the candidate and upload relevant information on the PMRF web portal.
    • Candidates can only avail PMRF at the institute where they are admitted for Ph.D. (Transfer to another institute not supporting PMRF is not allowed).
  4. Selection Criteria:

    • Evaluation based on research exposure, publications, performance in international competitions (e.g., Math Olympiad, ACM ICPC), academic grades, and recommendation letters.
  5. Performance Review:

    • Within 12-18 months of admission into the Ph.D. program, the PMRF panel reviews the candidate's progress. Continuation of PMRF depends on satisfactory performance, including a strong research proposal and endorsement from the host institution. Emphasis is given to publications in reputed journals/conferences.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Ph.D. Enrollment:

    • Pursuing Ph.D. in one of the PMRF granting institutions.
    • Completed up to 12 months (with a Master’s degree) or up to 24 months (with a Bachelor’s degree) in the Ph.D. program from the date of admission.
  2. Coursework and Grades:

    • Completed at least four full-semester subject courses with an aggregate CGPA of 8.5 out of 10. General courses like Seminar, Communication Skill, and Research Methodology are not considered.
  3. Institute Recommendation:

    • Strong recommendation from the PMRF Granting Institute where the student is enrolled. This includes a detailed research proposal and soft copies of publications.
  4. Restrictions:

    • Continuation of research exclusively at the host institute. Transfer to another PMRF eligible institute is prohibited.
    • Candidates enrolled via lateral entry cannot apply through the direct entry channel in subsequent years.
  5. Selection Criteria:

    • Assessment based on the quality of research proposal, publication record, academic performance, and contributions to reputed journals/conferences.
