About the Program
The CSIR Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship aims to identify and support promising young researchers with innovative ideas, providing them with the training and resources needed to conduct high-level research. The fellowship offers:
- Monthly Fellowship: INR 65,000 (consolidated).
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): As admissible.
- Contingency Grant: INR 3 lakh per annum, with up to 25% available for domestic and international travel, including per diem expenses.
Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be Indian citizens.
- Hold a PhD degree within three years of the award of the PhD degree or have submitted their PhD theses.
- Be below 32 years of age, with relaxations up to 5 years for SC/ST/Physically handicapped and women candidates, and up to 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates.

The selected fellows will receive:
- A consolidated fellowship of INR 65,000 per month.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per applicable rules.
- A contingency grant of INR 3 lakh per annum, with 25% available for travel.

Selection Criteria
Selections are based on the presentation of the proposed research project followed by an interview of shortlisted candidates by specially constituted committees.
Terms and Conditions
- The fellowship terms and conditions will align with those applicable to CSIR Research Associateship (RA) until further notice.
- The appointing CSIR laboratory will cover 20% of the annual expenditure from its internal resources.
- 20% of the fellowship amount will be paid as a lump sum at the end of the 1st and 2nd year, respectively.
- Selected candidates are expected to join within four months of the award's effective date.
- Candidates who completed their PhD at a particular CSIR laboratory are not eligible to become a PDF in the same laboratory under this scheme.
- The fellowship is tenable for two years and may be extended for a maximum of one additional year based on outstanding performance and recommendations.
