The Bharat Rural Livelihoods Foundation (BRLF) is an independent organization set up by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. It facilitates civil society action in partnership with state and central governments to improve the livelihoods and lives of rural households, particularly women, in the Central Indian Tribal Region. The BRLF collaborates with government entities, private sector philanthropies, and public and private sector undertakings to foster strategic partnerships, provide grants to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), strengthen smaller CSOs, build the capacity of grassroots professionals, and enable evidence-based insights into key government policies and programs concerning rural livelihoods and tribal development.
Job Purpose
The Research Fellow at BRLF will have the opportunity to shape and support the scope of work for the Research vertical, contributing to the emerging knowledge infrastructure on tribal development and sustainable livelihoods. The role includes developing and writing knowledge briefs, policy inputs/reforms, practice support notes, case studies, and research reports for government and non-government stakeholders. The position is suited for researchers with expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research and experience in writing policy briefs and reports.
Key Responsibilities
Conceptualize and design mixed-method research initiatives.
Travel to BRLF geographies to document work on sustainable livelihoods, natural resource management, and rights and entitlements for marginalized communities.
Contribute to the program and capacity-building verticals.
Manage and lead BRLF's existing research initiatives.
Curate a database on tribal development and rural livelihoods.
Support mixed-methods research projects and develop policy memos and technical papers.
Engage in data collection exercises.
Document BRLF's work on sustainable livelihoods and natural resource management.
Design and lead knowledge sharing and awareness initiatives.
Project manage evaluation studies and social audits.
Conduct training and workshops for CSOs on process documentation and data evaluation.
Assist in designing and developing new research initiatives.
Organize key events, conferences, seminars, and dialogues to disseminate BRLF knowledge products.
Represent BRLF in forums and platforms to showcase research and knowledge initiatives.
Support resource mobilization and capacity-building activities.
Undertake short research studies and rapid appraisals.
Qualifications and Experience
A post-graduate degree in Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, Statistics, Population studies, Gender studies, History, Development Studies, Public Policy, Social Work, or any related discipline.
Excellent written and communication skills in English; knowledge of languages spoken in the Central Indian Tribal Belt is desirable.
5-10 years of experience in designing and executing high-quality research in rural development, tribal development, sustainable livelihoods, climate change, agriculture, or forestry.
Skills in quantitative and qualitative data analysis using software like R, STATA, NVivo, Atlas Ti, or MAXQDA.
Experience in designing and conducting large research projects.
Proficiency in data visualization tools (Power BI, Data Studio, Tableau, etc.), MS Excel, and open-source platforms like ODK.
Willingness to travel extensively.
Ability to work independently and complete tasks on time.
Experience in managing multi-partner research projects is desirable.
Compensation
The remuneration package is budgeted for Rs. 75,000 – Rs. 1,10,000 per month, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and salary history.
