Yercaud Express Derailment Attempt: Iron Rod on Track Sparks Major Safety Scare, 3 HC Judges Narrowly Escape

In a shocking incident near Magudanchavadi in Salem district, unidentified miscreants allegedly attempted to derail the Yercaud-Chennai Express on Tuesday night by placing a heavy iron rail across the track. According to sources, three sitting Madras High Court judges and a few retired judges were travelling on the train at the time.

What Happened?

The Yercaud Express, which departed from Erode and was en route to Chennai Central, hit an iron rod that had been deliberately placed on the railway track near Mavelipalayam and Magudanchavadi stations around 9:45 PM.

The engine dragged the iron object for nearly a kilometre before sustaining damage, causing the train to halt abruptly. No injuries were reported, but the situation posed a serious risk to hundreds of passengers, including top judiciary officials.

Swift Action and Investigation

Following the incident, officials from the Erode and Salem railway divisions, along with Erode railway police, rushed to the scene. Despite extensive inspection, the engine could not be repaired on-site. A replacement engine from Salem was dispatched and connected by 11:31 PM, allowing the train to resume its journey after a delay of nearly two hours.

Railway Officials Speak

An official from the Salem railway division said:

“No passengers were hurt. The train was operational again using a replacement engine. The situation was handled swiftly and safely.”

Railway Police React

K Babu, Deputy Superintendent of the Railway Police, commented:

“We are actively investigating the matter. At this point, we don’t suspect a major motive. It could have been the work of intoxicated individuals loitering near the tracks.”

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Railways Act, 1989, and authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations. Evidence has been collected from the site, and forensic analysis is underway.

Judges Were Returning from Erode Event

Sources revealed that three sitting Madras High Court judges, along with some retired judges, were aboard the train. They were returning to Chennai after attending a memorial service in Erode.

The presence of senior judiciary members has added urgency to the investigation.

Legal and Security Implications

Such sabotage attempts carry severe penalties under the Railways Act and may also be examined under criminal conspiracy laws if any malicious intent is proven. Railway security teams are expected to intensify patrols along vulnerable stretches and review track surveillance protocols in the region.
