US President Joe Biden and the First Lady will host a State Dinner at the South Lawn of the White House today, which is expected to be attended by 400 guests. Prime Minister Modi visit also includes an address by him to the joint session of the US Congress.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on his first State visit to the United States, was greeted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at the White House in Washington DC a short while ago. According to the White House, the President, the First Lady and PM Modi enjoyed a musical tribute to the regions of India. Earlier in the day, Jill Biden hosted Modi at the National Science Foundation (NSF), where they participated at an event to highlight shared priorities of India and the US around education and the workforce. This first meeting between Modi and the Bidens will set the stage for the formal bilateral talks between the two sides.
What made news yesterday? Modi arrived in Washington from New York where he led a historic event at the UN Headquarters earlier in the day to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga, attended by UN officials, diplomats and prominent personalities. In DC, PM Modi also participated in a Skilling for Future event, which was followed by meetings with CEOs and top executives from Micron, GE and Applied Materials.

This is his third invitation to Washington DC since he became India’s head of government – the first in 2014 to meet former President Barack Obama, the second in June 2017 to meet former President Donald Trump, and now to meet President Joe Biden. The visit is set against the backdrop of a rapidly transforming world order, where India needs to keep both its strategic independence and geopolitical balance.

Sources said the sit-down private engagement between the Prime Minister and US President Joe Biden is aimed at “informal warming up to each other” and “fixing the nuts and bolts” ahead of the official delegation-level talks Thursday.
After the talks, the two sides are expected to announce a defence industrial cooperation roadmap, a deal on co-producing jet engines for fighter aircraft, initiatives on critical and emerging technologies which will include a roadmap on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and space.
