About the Program
The fellowship is intended for exceptional scientists and technologists who have made impactful contributions in their fields. Awardees are expected to associate with a mission or thrust area program of CSIR or an area of interest to CSIR.
Benefits
Selected candidates will receive:
- Monthly Fellowship: ?50,000 for awardees in service, in addition to their existing salary.
- For Retired Awardees: Fellowship amount equivalent to the salary drawn by the Secretary to the Government of India, after adjusting the pension.
- Annual Grant: Up to ?25,00,000, with ?10,00,000 specifically for travel purposes.
- Overall Annual Grant Ceiling: Up to ?40,00,000.
Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be Indian scientists/technologists or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) working in India.
- Be associated with a mission or thrust area program of CSIR or an area of interest to CSIR.
- Have impactful scientific and/or technological contributions over the last 10 years.

Selection Criteria
The selection process involves a two-tier procedure:
- Screening Committee: Scrutinizes and shortlists the relevant nominations.
- Search-cum-Selection Committee: Considers and recommends shortlisted nominations. This committee includes eminent scientists, technologists, and industrialists, constituted by the Vice President of CSIR.
Terms and Conditions
- Self-nominations/applications are not accepted.
- The fellowship is tenable in India.
- Fellows may continue at their present place of work or at any CSIR Institute/laboratory as decided by DG, CSIR.
- The fellowship duration is initially three years, extendable up to a maximum of two additional years, subject to appraisal, or until the awardee reaches 70 years of age, whichever is earlier.
- Nominations can be proposed by:
- Vice-Chancellors of Indian Universities
- Directors of CSIR Laboratories
- R&D Institutions and Institutes of National Importance
- Secretaries of Science Departments of the Government of India
- Director-Generals of major R&D organizations (e.g., DRDO, ICAR, ICMR, IMD)
- Chairmen of Atomic Energy Commission, UGC, etc.
- Chairmen/Presidents of Industrial Associations (e.g., CII, FICCI)
